Is 'short sale' a term for stocks or futures?

The Google Define defines it as "'ot holding securities or commodities that one sells in expectation of a fall in prices; "a short sale"; "short in cotton" '. Does it mean that if I think the prices of the stocks or futures I hold will decrease, so I will sell them now, and buy them back in the future when the prices are lower.
